Bodrum - general information about the area

Bodrum property
Bodrum is located in the south west of Turkey at the point where the Mediterranean meets the Agean Sea. Bodrum is indeed the gem of Turkey located on a peninsular in the Aegean Sea. It has miles of sandy beaches with delightful villages of white houses which give it that special atmosphere. Once you have come under its spell, you will not be able to stay away and return again and again. It is an ideal place to invest in your dream apartment or villa in Turkey. It has a history going back as much as 5000 years and you can inspect the evidence if you visit the castle, the myndus gate, the Roman theatre or the Mausoleum.

Bodrum also known previously as Halicarnassus, was the birthplace of Heredotus and the site of the tomb of King Mausolus. The Mausoleum dating from the 4th century BC was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Bodrum castle is also worth a visit and dates from the 15th century in the time of the Crusaders. Bodrum is good starting points for a voyage of discovery along the Carian Coast to explore its mythology and extensive history amongst the spectacular scenery of beaches, rocky inlets and villages.

The town itself attracts tourists from all over the world who love to stroll round the promenades and the marina and take in the atmosphere. Near the town you can swim in the warm, blue Agean Sea which is very safe as it is almost tideless and there are no dangerous currents. You can spend many happy hours shopping in Bodrum where you will find countless shops in the narrow streets full of leather goods, natural sponges, carpets, sandals and embroidery for your souvenir of Turkey. There are daily ferries to the Greek island of Kos in the summer if you want a change of scenery.

The peninsular of Bodrum

This is also well worth exploring with lots of bays and seaside villages which are accessible by road using the Dolmus buses or from the ferry trips from Bodrum harbour. It is also surrounded by 32 islands and islets scattered amongst the 100 mile coastline. There are several resorts well worth visiting on the Bodrum peninsular including Bardakci, Gumbet, Bitez, Ortakent, Bagla and Akyalar all with fine sandy beaches. On the shoreline you can enjoy lovely quiet walks through the orange trees near to the beach without seeing the crowds as in Bodrum. No other area of the Turkish Agean coast provides the visitor with the opportunity to enjoy tradional Turkish life only minutes away of the hustle and bustle of a modern tourist centre. Other resorts in Bodrum area are as follows; -

Gumbet

Gumbet is close to Bodrum and over years has become a resort in its own right. Gumbet bay has some very popular hotels adjacent to its attractive long, sandy beach. At night the place becomes alive and is full of pubs, bars and discos which are very popular with the young especially, and you can vibrate till dawn. There are also plenty of water sports available including sailing, diving and wind-surfing.

Yaliciftlik

This resort is about 20 minutes from Bodrum by bus along a twisting road and through the many pine forests in the area. There are two bays, the first is after the end of Karaada Island and is a shingle beach with several small restaurants and bars. The other beach at Yaliciftlik is sandy and perfect for swimming and water sports. A short distance from Yaliciftlik, there is the small village of Ciftlikkoy with several traditional farm houses where you can saviour the local honey and figs grown in the nearby orchards.

Torba

Torba a recently built, modern village with plenty of villas and apartments about 5 miles north of Bodrum with a modern marina. Golkoy and Turkbuku are tiny, picturesque fishing villages where you see typical Turkish life whilst having a drink at the local bar overlooking the lovely bay. You can also take a boat trip to Karaada where you can bathe in the rich mineral waters inside the caves to beautify your skin. There is also the remains of a Byzantine monastery to explore. Ferries to Didim leave from Torba harbour across the Gulf of Gulluk.

Bitez

Bitez is within easy reach of Bodrum by dolmus which has a very wide beach and a number of piers and jetties reaching into the clear blue sea which is a joy for sunbathing and swimming. Bitez is in the main citrus growing area on the Bodrum Peninsular with hundreds of acres of mandarin groves in the trees close to the beach. It has a shallow bay which is safe for children and you can hire boats at many of the jetties to explore the bay. Bitez is also quite lively at night and is a good alternative to Bodrum for drinking and dancing into the early hours and beyond at its numerous bars and restaurants. The only Turkish Delight on the peninsular is made in Bitez.

Ortakent and Yahsi

These resorts occupy the next bay to Bitez to the west. The large beach is popular with families although the water becomes deep very quickly away from the shore. There are several beachside cafes and camp sites in the area. The village has distinctive 17th century tower houses which are unique and were originally built for defensive purposes.

Yalikavak

About 12 miles from Bodrum is the resort and town of Yalikavak which is small but very busy with lots of fishing boats and yachts in the harbour. The restaurants near the harbour are teeming with locals and tourists in the summer. There is a small beach with plenty of waterside cafes to drink a beer or a coffee and while the time away in restful bliss.

Gumusluk

One of the oldest if not the oldest village on the Bodrum Peninsular. It is an historical village with many archaeological sites and it is therefore preserved and protected. The status is designed to protect the ancient site of Myndos nearby but there is not much to see of this these days because of building developments at the beginning of the 20th century which meant that valuable remains of the theatre and stadium were lost. From the shore you see the well known Rabbit Island and watch the rabbits from the beachside restaurant and make friends with the hospitable local population.

Turgutreis

On the west tip of the Bodrum peninsular lies the little town of Turgutreis named after the famous admiral Turgut Reis. It has a small town centre and several long and sandy beaches. This part of the Bodrum Peninsular is ideal for windsurfing and attracts professional surfers because of the healthy wind in this area. Next to Turgutreis lies Kadikalesi which is a fine holiday resort for all ages.
